Nautical Terminology
Directions:
Nautical terminology has been used since before 900AD, and is a language
that may be confusing to some, but one that is simple to learn. Listed
below are several nautical terms.
Abaft: Stern, or rear of the boat.
Abeam: Not located on the boat, but right angles to the keel.
Aft: Toward the stern
Ahead: forward direction
Aloft: Above the deck
Amidships: This is the middle section of the boat.
Astern: Back of the boat.
Below: Beneath the deck, below the deck.
Bow: This is the front part of the ship. It is V-shaped, so that the
boat or ship
can cut through the water.
Fore/forward: towards the bow or front of the boat.
Leeward: is the direction away from the wind.
Port: When on the boat and facing the bow or front of the boat, this is
the left
side. This can also mean a harbo.
Starboard: When facing the bow, this is your right side.
Stern: This is toward the aft end of the hull.
Weathered: The side of the boat towards, which the wind is blowing.
Windward: The side from which a wind is blowing.
