Starboard
Starboard refers to the right side of a vessel, when a person is facing
towards the bow.
If a vessel has running lights, then the starboard is indicated with a
green light.
The term comes from when boats were steered by specialized oar. This oar
was manned
by a sailor in the stern of the boat. Like most of society, there were
many more right-handed sailors than left-handed sailors, meaning that
the right-handed sailors holding the steering oar stood on the right
side of the boat. The over the years the two words steering board become
corrupted into starboard.
Likewise, the term port side resulted from the practice of sailors
mooring on the left side the port board side to prevent the steering
boards from being crushed when coming into port. Over the years, the
term port board was shortened to port.
