Terminology
Nautical terminology has been used since
before 900AD, and is a language that may be confusing to some, but one
that is simple to learn. Listed below are several nautical terms.
What is a Yacht?
Originally, a yacht was describes as a light
and fast sailing vessel used to transport
important people. Later, it came to mean any vessel, larger than a
dinghy, which was used for pleasure cruising and/or racing.
Parts of a Boat
There are several nautical terms for the
parts of a boat, a few you may be familiar with such as the deck, which
is the permanent covering over the hull of the ship.
The Bow
The bow is the point of the vessel that is
heading into the water.
The Stern
The stern is the back or aft part of a
vessel.
Starboard
Starboard refers to the right side of a
vessel, when a person is facing towards the bow.
Sail Plan
A sail-plan is a set of diagrams, which
shows the best combinations of sail proposed for a particular ship.
These diagrams are usually prepared by a naval architect and consist of
three configurations to be used for the three different forms of air
currents.
