Yacht Racing Classes and Ratings
There are several factors that affect the speed a boat will complete a
course, some of these factors are the size of the sails, the ships
length, weight and shape of its hull. Because of these factors, most
forms of yacht racing require all boats to be of one-design class, or
they use a handicapping system to balance the scales between the
different designs.
In one-design race, all vessels conform to the same class rules. By
ensuring that the vessels are as identical as possible, this highlights
the skill of the skipper and crew. Every class has is own detailed
specifications, which each vessel must meet to be considered as a
member. At important regattas, all vessels are measured and inspected
before the event to insure they conform.
When the yachts in a regatta do not belong to the same class, a handicap
is used to modify boats times. Handicaps attempt to identify the normal
speed of each yacht. Once this has been set, the handicap is then added
to the yacht's finishing time.
